Family groups, society groups and school groups are where viral videos reach most people in India. They're also where fake and misleading clips travel fastest, because they come from people we trust. Here's how to check a forwarded video on your phone before you pass it on.
Read the forward label first
WhatsApp marks messages that have been forwarded. A double-arrow "Forwarded many times" label means the message has passed through a long chain of people. It doesn't mean the video is fake, but it does mean the person who sent it to you almost certainly didn't film it and probably doesn't know where it came from.
Save the video to your phone
Long-press the video and save it, or open it and use the share or save option. Having the file lets you upload it to a checker and take screenshots of key frames.
Ask: is this old footage with a new caption?
The most common trick isn't AI at all. It's a real video from another year, city or country, forwarded with a new, alarming caption. Riots, floods, accidents and "attacks" are often recycled this way.
- Pause on two or three clear, distinctive frames and take screenshots.
- Open Google Lens (in the Google app or Google Photos) and search each screenshot.
- Look at the dates of the results. If the same footage appeared years ago, the new caption is false.
Our reverse video search guide has more detail and other tools.
Check whether the place matches the caption
Look at signboards, the script and language on them, number plates, the shape of autos and buses, police uniforms and the weather. A video claimed to be from Hyderabad shouldn't have signs in a script used elsewhere, and a "Delhi" video shouldn't show a coastline.
Look for AI tells
AI-generated clips are increasingly common on WhatsApp, especially fake "news" clips, fake speeches and fake celebrity endorsements. Watch the hands, the faces in the background, any text, and whether the lips match the words. See our 12 signs of AI video.
Scan it
Upload the saved video to Video Verifier. A Quick Scan is free, needs no sign-up and takes under a minute. It checks the frames, the motion, the voice and any hidden AI labels, and shows the moments and reasons behind its answer. A Deep Scan checks every second of picture and speech for the videos that really matter.
Forwarded videos are re-compressed every time they're shared, which removes detail. If you can, find the original post (on Instagram, YouTube or X) and paste that link instead. The original gives any checker more to work with.
See if Indian fact-checkers have covered it

- PIB Fact Check for claims about central government schemes and announcements
Several of these organisations also run WhatsApp tiplines where you can send a video and ask them to check it.
Reply kindly in the group
If the video turns out to be false, reply in the group with what you found: the original date, the fact-check link or your scan report. Keep it friendly. "I checked this, it's actually from 2019" works far better than "this is fake news". People are much more likely to stop forwarding when they don't feel embarrassed.
If a video is targeting you or someone you know
If a fake video uses your face or voice, or is being used to cheat people, report it on the platform and at cybercrime.gov.in, or call 1930. Our guide on what to do about a deepfake of yourself explains the steps.
